Description

After drawing Cinderella and Belle in historically accurate gowns, I knew Ariel had to be next. So here she is!

Ariel's pink dress in the movie is absolutely horrendous! Not only does the gown make no sense (and looks like every other Disney Princess gown with the same sleeves, bodice, and skirt) but that bubble-gum pink does not go well with Ariel's fire-engine-red hair.

So I looked around different decades in to see what would go well with Ariel. For one thing, Ariel's hair in the movie does not go with any time period (except for more modern times...she's got what I call "80's big hair"). So I ignored the hair and looked around to see what style would go well with her. When I researched te 1830's, I knew Ariel just had to wear that style!

So here is Ariel in a dress based off English 1831 fashion plates. (The original The Little Mermaid Story is Danish. "Den lille havfrue" by Hans Christian Andersen. I tried to look up Danish fashion in the 1830's but that was difficult to find. So I settled for an English style.) I based this gown off two 1831 dresses & combined different aspects of the dress to create this gown. I decided to give Ariel a more flattering sea-green colour of dress, which looks better with her complexion & hair colour.

As for the hair in the early 1830's, women actually wore it parted down the middle (with the ringlets at the side of the face and the back pulled up into fancy styles. But the thing is...Ariel just did not look like, well, Ariel...without her side-swept fringe. So I kept that part of her hairstyle (since she seriously looks totally different with parted hair) the same, but the rest of her hair style is 1831. Women seemed to wear quite a few flower accessories in their hair.

I gave Ariel her Disney face (instead of drawing in my own style), so she is more recognizable.

Backgrounds are hard for me! But his came out a little to my satisfaction. Painting water is hard, but I'm glad the ocean came out like it did. And the sky too. (And yes, the blue part of the sky is supposed to look a little hazy, because they are the cirrostratus type of clouds (a.k.a. high-level clouds).

I hope everybody likes this!

Please take a look at my versions of other Disney Princesses I have drawn. :)

Snow White will be up next week (on Wednesday)!

This was drawn with Copic Multiliners (in 0.05, 0.03, 0.1., & 0.3) and the coloured in with Koi Watercolours & a tiny bit of Copic Markers.

And damn, you're right. :( I couldn't find anything on the fashion of Denmark in the 1830s. :(
